What is Grass Fed Meat?

What is “Grass-Fed” Meat?
Jim Fogle, J&R’s master butcher jokes, “I’m often asked, ”what’s the hype about grass-fed meats.” He laughs and shrugs as he says, “I always have the same answer: No hype really… grass-fed meats are tasty, have less fat and more healthy nutrients than grain-fed and feedlot animals.”

With 97% of all beef commercially available going to feedlots, less than 3% of American meat is raised under natural grazing conditions. As people taste the savory flavor of grass-fed meats and learn about it’s wholesome health attributes, demand for these meats is sure to increase.

Let’s talk about grass-fed beef’s nutritional profile and how a simple change from grain-fed to grass-fed beef can benefit you and your family’s health.

Compared to grain-fed beef, grass-fed beef has less fat. Less saturated fat means less calories and cholesterol. Did you know that over half of Americans are deficient in their body’s supply of omega-3s? Grass-fed beef not only provides omega-3s and CLA at levels not found in grain-fed beef, it also provides for the optimal omega-3/omega-6 balance.

These are called the “good fatty acids” and help to protect us from high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, and brain disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, ADD, and Alzheimer’s disease. Most impressive, however, is research showing omega-3s and CLA may be one of our most potent defenses against Cancer.

Wait… there’s more: grass-fed beef contains 10 times the beta-carotene, three times the vitamin E, and higher levels of thiamine and riboflavin (B vitamins), calcium, magnesium and potassium than its grain-fed counterpart. These vitamins and minerals are vital to healthy functioning of your immune, vision, skin, and skeletal systems.

Health benefits aside, people often turn to grass-fed meats for two additional reasons: (1) taste, and (2) the humane animal husbandry practices that underpin this method of livestock production.

You know the health benefits of grass-fed beef, but to truly understand what we mean when we say the taste is succulent and delicately flavorful you’ll have to try it for yourself!

We hope our specials will provide just such an inducement to explore the many varieties of natural, grass-fed meats available at J&R Natural Meats.
